For the collector, the right 2002 V-Rod is a documented first-year machine with its stock hardware, correct early appearance and evidence of informed VRSC maintenance. Its importance is simple and specific: it is the motorcycle that put overhead cams, liquid cooling, Porsche-assisted development and a 9000-rpm Harley-Davidson V-twin into regular production. That makes it one of the few modern Harleys whose significance can be explained with a specification sheet as convincingly as with a badge.
